Self-Care Tips You Can Do Today

Writer's picture: Mary Rogers KirbyMary Rogers Kirby

Self-care is often synonymous with indulgent bubble baths, sipping on a warm cup of tea or coffee, or treating ourselves to occasional luxuries. Self-care is about consistent practices we can incorporate into our daily lives. Because, who has time for bubble baths every day? In the midst of catering to the needs of others, we often neglect our own well-being. Self-care is far from selfish. Here are five practical self-care ideas you can start implementing right away:

  1. Take a break from technology. Put down your phone and turn off the T.V. Resist the urge to endlessly scroll through social media or news feeds. You'd be surprised how much time you can reclaim by disconnecting. Engage in screen-free activities like reading a book or pursuing a hobby. Simply be present in the moment without the distractions of technology.

  2. Set boundaries. Don’t be afraid to say no when necessary. Prioritize activities and commitments that replenish your energy and well-being, rather than overextending yourself with unnecessary stressors. Consistently enforce your boundaries, knowing that they may need adjustment or flexibility from time to time.

  3. Practice gratitude. Cultivate a daily practice of gratitude by acknowledging at least three things you're thankful for each day. Shifting your focus to the positives in your life can significantly enhance your overall well-being and perspective.

  4. Connect with others. Take a break from work and engage in non-work-related conversations with colleagues. Make time to connect with loved ones, even if it's just sharing a meal together or reaching out to a friend you haven't spoken to in a while. Human connection is essential for nurturing our emotional well-being. For more about connection, see my previous post about the loneliness epidemic.

  5. Make sleep a priority. Do you really need to watch more tiktok videos or check instagram when you should be sleeping? Create a  routine for bedtime that elicits relaxation.

Start with a few changes and then you can add more as these ideas become more habitual. Make yourself a priority. Nurture yourself so you can show up as your best self.
